Syllabus for pre-PhD Distance learning course on Philosophy

GLOBALIZATION AND DIALOGUE OF CULTURES

1. Course module description
This course module covers main concepts of globalization and dialogue of cultures. It consists of several sections, each of which is devoted to a modern special philosophical problem. The course module introduces the concepts of identity, culture and civilization as well.

2. Objectives of the course module
2.1 To introduce students with the core concepts of globalization and with the concept of dialogue of cultures.
2.2 To show the connections between processes of globalization and the processes of dialogue of cultures.
2.3 To consider impact of the dialogue of cultures on modern world.
2.4 To make differences in the ways and stages of globalization.
2.5 To introduce the concept of identity and its relation to modern processes of globalization.
2.6 To show perspectives of dialogue of cultures under the modern processes of globalization.

3. Assessment
Since this is a distance-learning course, assessment will be based only on students’ written work.

  • Weekly written essays – 60%
  • Final essay - 40%

4. Course module program

Class 1 The concept of globalization. Historical meaning of globalization. Globalization as objective process. Westernization, Americanization and Muslimization as the main ways of globalization

In the first class, the concept of globalization will be introduced. Methodological aspects of globalization studies will be introduced as well.

Assignment 1:

  • Is globalization new to our days? Please, substantiate your answer. 
  • Why are there a few ways of globalization? Please, substantiate your answer.
  • How is it possible to clearly understand the meaning of globalization?

Class 2 The stages of globalization. Economy, politics and culture as the main fields of globalization
The main purpose of this class is to find out the following concepts: stages and fields of globalization. The present condition of globalization processes will be presented as well.

Assignment 2:
Please, answer the following questions (up to 5 pages):

  • What is the objective background for economical globalization? Please, substantiate your answer. 
  • What is the purpose of political globalization?
  • Are the cultural globalization and dialogue of cultures the same concepts? Please, substantiate your answer.

Class 3 Transformation of social and cultural lives under the processes of globalization. The main problems of cultural globalization
In this class, the modern processes of transformation in various societies will be presented. The concept of cultural globalization will be presented.

  • What is the concept of mass-culture?
  • Describe and explain globalization as a process of leveling of cultural variety? Please, substantiate your answer.
  • What is the local phenomenon of culture?

Class 4 The features of dialogue of cultures. The problem of rationality in the modern dialogue. The world-view aspect of globalization
The main purpose of this class is to find out the difference between globalization of culture and dialogue of cultures. Also, the concept of social-cultural model will be discussed.

Assignment 4:

  • What phenomenon can be a real basic for dialogue of cultures? Please, substantiate your answer.
  • How do the processes of globalization influence on world-outlook features of modern world? Please, substantiate your answer. 

Class 5 Cultural /national, religion/ revival and the myth creativity in the dialog of cultures.
The processes of cultural revival and its reasons will be discussed in this class. The concept of myth-creativity will be introduced.

Assignment 5:
Please, answer the following questions (up to 5 pages):

  • Is it true, that the cultural revival is the “answer” to the globalization? Please, substantiate your answer.
  • Does the modern revival of cultures become the myth creativity? Please, substantiate your answer. 
  • What kinds of myth creativity exist in the modern world?

Class 6 The concept of identity. The problem of identity in the modern world. Traditional and civil identity
This class covers identity issues in the modern world. They are one of the fundamental problems in the modern era. Contemporary notions on traditional and civil identity will be introduced.

Assignment 6:

  • Why identity issues are so vocal in the modern world? Please, substantiate your answer.
  • How is the problem of identity interralated with the processes of globalization in the modern world? Please, substantiate your answer.

Class 7 Identity and culture. The role of culture and state in the process of formation of identity
The main purpose of this class is to present ways of identity construction. One is the traditional culture, the other is civil identity.

Class 8 Closing exam
Based on your interest, choose any topic discussed within this course module and write an analytic essay (13-15 pages).
